KUCHING, Sept 28 — The unique tradition of ‘berselarak’ — a boat procession to Pulau Salak held in conjunction with ‘berselawat’ (sending blessings upon Prophet Muhammad SAW) — must be preserved for future generations as a cultural heritage found nowhere else, said Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

Speaking at the 10th Pulau Salak Berselawat Programme 2025 at Kampung Pulau Salak today, the Santubong MP praised the local community for keeping the practice alive.

“I am deeply moved by the uniqueness of the tradition we have here. The residents of Pulau Salak not only uphold the practice of ‘berselawat’ every year, but also make the event special with the tradition of ‘berselarak’ – traveling by boat to Pulau Salak.

“This is a cultural heritage that cannot be found elsewhere, especially in Kuching City, and it further enhances the identity and distinctiveness of our community.

“Moreover, programmes like this strengthen Islamic brotherhood, foster the values of unity, and reinforce moral values and identity, particularly among the younger generation.

“The ‘berselawat’ ceremony is an act of worship, but at the same time, it serves as an extraordinary platform for community cohesion,” she said.

Nancy thanked the organisers, village committee, residents, invited guests, and the wider community for ensuring the success of the programme, calling it a meaningful annual event.

She added that berselawat reflects the love for Prophet Muhammad SAW, bringing blessings, mercy, and intercession while nurturing spiritual devotion and unity.

Reaffirming government support for such initiatives, Nancy said: “The government will continue to support initiatives like this, as they are part of efforts to empower human development and build a morally upright and resilient society.”

She expressed hope the programme would continue to inspire future generations to preserve the tradition.

“Once again, I would like to record my appreciation to all parties who made the 10th Pulau Salak Berselawat Programme a success.

“May Allah SWT bless all our efforts and make this event a source of mercy and prosperity for the entire community,” she said. — The Borneo Post
