Anwar, Trump discuss Malaysia’s role in regional peace ahead of US president’s KL visit for Asean Summit next month

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — Malaysia, as the current Chair of Asaen, is reaffirming its proactive role in regional security, following successful efforts to facilitate a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand.
In a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump earlier today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised Malaysia’s commitment to promoting peace in South-east Asia.
“Malaysia, as Asean Chair, will continue to play a proactive role in ensuring regional peace, particularly concerning the Cambodia–Thailand issue,” Anwar said in a Facebook post today.
According to Anwar, President Trump acknowledged Malaysia’s efforts, describing the ceasefire as a “major achievement” that reflects both Malaysia’s credibility and Asean’s resilience.
The prime minister also expressed his appreciation for the United States’ involvement in ensuring the ceasefire was realised.
“Malaysia looks forward to President Trump’s attendance at the Asean Summit next month, which will serve as an important platform to strengthen cooperation for regional peace, stability, and prosperity,” Anwar added.
The 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits are scheduled to take place from October 26 to October 28 in Putrajaya.
The phone call coincided with a courtesy visit from Jamieson Greer, United States Trade Representative (USTR), who is in Malaysia for the 57th Asean Economic Ministers’ Meeting and related discussions.
Analysts say Malaysia’s active engagement underscores its ambition to consolidate Asean’s role as a stabilising force in the region, while strengthening ties with key international partners.
