US Special Envoy Mark Savaya to visit Iraq, warns against ‘outside interference’
BAGHDAD — Mark Savaya, the special envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump to Iraq, announced plans to visit Iraq soon to meet with senior leaders. He emphasized American opposition to any “outside interference” in the formation of the country’s next government, following the Nov. 11 parliamentary elections.
“I look forward to visiting Iraq soon and meeting with the key leaders,” Savaya stated in a social media post. “Iraq has made significant progress over the past three years, and we hope to see this progress continue in the coming months.”
Savaya also made clear the U.S. position regarding Iraq’s internal political developments. “Let it be clear that the United States will not accept or permit any outside interference in shaping the new Iraqi government,” he said.
He noted that Washington is “carefully” monitoring the government formation process.
Following the vote, Mark Savaya congratulated the Iraqi people on what he called the successful completion of parliamentary elections, describing the vote as “a crucial step toward strengthening democracy and stability in the country.” He added, “The United States remains firmly committed to supporting Iraq’s sovereignty, reform efforts, and endeavors to end external interference and armed militias.”
Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission last week released the final results of the 2025 parliamentary elections, confirming turnout at more than 56 percent and publishing the full distribution of all 329 seats across the country’s 18 governorates.
