Aberdeen are closing in on a summer transfer window deal to sign former St Mirren midfielder Connor Ronan.

The 28-year-old former England and Republic of Ireland youth international is currently at Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids, but his MLS contract runs out at the end of the calendar year.

Colorado/the MLS are understood to have an option to extend Ronan’s contract by another year, and there are several other suitors Stateside.

However, Aberdeen are looking to complete a deal to bring him back to Scotland, with Ronan keen on a move back to the UK.

Dons boss Stephen Robinson wants to link back up with Ronan, who impressed in Scottish football while on loan with the Buddies from boyhood club Wolverhampton Wanderers during the 2021/22 season.

Rochdale-born Ronan, who has played both attacking and defensive midfield roles during his career, finished joint St Mirren top scorer in the 21/22 campaign with eight goals.

Three of those goals came against the Dons, including a September 2021 double, which prompted speculation Ronan could be Pittodrie bound after manager Jim Goodwin swapped Paisley for Pittodrie in February 2022.

Now-Reds head coach Robinson was Goodwin’s Buddies successor, and was in charge when Ronan fired in a stunning 30-yarder in a Scottish Cup quarter-final defeat to Hearts.

Since leaving Wolves for Colorado in 2023, Ronan has racked up 103 appearances, with two goals and 10 assists – though he has spent time on sidelines with injury in the 2024, 2025 and ongoing 2026 US seasons.

He is also a player who will be on Aberdeen sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel’s radar, given his former job building MLS outfit St Louis City.

During the current MLS campaign, which kicked off in February, Ronan has made two starts in seven appearances, missing several matches with a leg problem.

While he was still at Wolves, Ronan played in the English Championship and Premier League.

He also played in England’s League One during loan stints at Portsmouth, Walsall and Blackpool, as well as spending temporary spells with Slovakia’s Dunajska Streda and Switzerland’s Grasshoppers.

Aberdeen have already confirmed two pre-contract midfielder signings for Robinson’s summer squad rebuild, landing Brad Lyons from Kilmarnock and Austrian Alexander Briedl, while another Killie player, centre-back Lewis Mayo, has also agreed to join the Dons in what is set to be a busy off-season of ins and outs at Pittodrie.
