Downpours have caused flooding and damaged roads across Aberdeenshire today.

Communities including Banchory and Laurencekirk were hit by heavy rain.

In Banchory, residents took to social media to describe torrential showers of a like they’d rarely seen.

Union Square in Aberdeen’s City Centre has seen shops shut due to the rain pour.

Roads in Aberdeenshire towns have also taken a beating due to the weather.

The rain comes after a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms was issued across parts of Aberdeenshire, Moray and the Highlands.

Issued by the Met Office, the warning started at 3pm this afternoon and is scheduled to remain in place until 10pm.

Workers have said to The P&J that they are trying to reopen, but the lights keep tripping when switched on.

Wet floor signs and buckets are also visible.

According to the Met Office, people should expect “probably some damage to a few buildings and structures” due to the lightning.

People are reminded to protect themselves if they are outdoors during a thunderstorm by finding a “safe, enclosed shelter”, such as a car.
