Daniel Madej’s switch from defence to attack is paying dividends for Oban Camanachd as he bagged his third goal over the last two matches in a 3-1 win over Beauly in the second round of the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup.

Daniel MacVicar scored the other two before Beauly’s Iain Hunter countered.

Oban Camanachd assistant manager Iain MacMillan said: “Daniel Madej is a versatile player but he’s been hampered by injury and illness this season.

“We have a settled back five, so we’ve played him in attack, and he’s come up with the goods. Malcolm Clark was also excellent on the right wing, using the ball well.”

Newtonmore’s trophy defence started with a 5-0 win at Kyles Athletic Brodie MacBean scored the only goal of the first half, finishing low into the net following Michael Russell’s free-hit from around the penalty spot.

Two-goal Matthew Sloss, Struan Ross and Arron MacBean completed the scoring.

More manager Peter Ross said: “We started the second half on fire and whilst all the forwards were good, Michael Russell gives us something different.

“He had a good old-fashioned battle with Andy King and Michael’s a no-nonsense type of player. Arron MacBean also did well when he came on.”

Oban’s Scott Campbell cannot get the ball past Beauly keeper Lennox Stewart.

Col Glen push Kingussie again

Kingussie must have suffered flashbacks to their late 2-0 league win over Col Glen before eventually winning 2-1 in their tie at The Dell.

The visitors led through Neily Mcnaughton’s early strike, but Dylan Borthwick levelled soon after the restart with substitute Savio Genini scoring the winner just a minute from time.

Kingussie manager Ronald Ross said: “Credit to Col Glen as they more than played their part in the match. Scott Symons in goals and Cally MacNaughton at full back were both excellent for them.”

Trailing 3-0 at half-time, away from home to Premiership opposition, few would have given National Division side Glenurquhart any hope of progressing, but they fought back to draw 3-3 before winning 4-2 on penalties.

Findlay Macdonald, Ross Loughray and Ali MacLean’s own goal, following Findlay Macdonald’s cross, had Lochaber 3-0 ahead, but two-goal Neale Reid and Fraser Heath scored within eight second half minutes to eventually force extra-time.

With no further scoring, Glen stalwart John Barr converted the decisive penalty and their keeper Tommy Ellis said: “I thought we should have finished it off within the 90 minutes and made more of our chances, especially in the first half.”

There were just 14 minutes remaining when Ross Gordon, pushed into attack from his midfield role, moved the ball into space before beating the excellent Scott MacLachlan in the home goal to give Skye a 1-0 win at Inveraray. Stand-in Skye boss David Taylor said: “I never felt we would lose the game, but Inveraray certainly battled hard.”

Fort William reached the last-eight with a 3-2 win at Lovat. Ewen Campbell put the Fort ahead before Danny Kelly levelled. Archie MacKinnon and Hamish Shaw had the visitors 3-1 up as the tie went into the closing stages.

Fort William keeper Paul Mackay comes out to save from the onrushing Lewis Tawse (Lovat). Lovat v Fort William in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup 2nd Round tie, played at Balgate, Kiltarlity.

However, Lovat, who were without Greg Matheson who was with their second team after coming out of their ‘named-10 players’, cut the deficit four minutes into stoppage time through Marc MacLachlan’s penalty, but it wasn’t enough.

A fit-again Archie MacRae scored twice as Kinlochshiel won 4-2 at Glasgow Mid Argyll. John MacRae and Ali Nixon also netted for Shiel with former Aberdour player Logan Adam countering twice for the home side.

Both GMA keeper Jonathan Oates and his opposite number Josh Grant saved penalties.

Shiel manager Willie MacRae said: “It was a funny old game. We were very good in the first half but never turned up after the break.”

Caberfeidh were awarded a bye when Oban Celtic were unable to field a team.

Skye Camanachd and Kinlochshiel drew 3-3 in the WCA Premier League, a result which favours league-leaders Badenoch. Abby Maclean grabbed a Skye hat-trick whilst Maura Mackenzie’s double and Lorna MacRae countered for Shiel.
