Some Areas in Kurdistan Region Enjoy Mild Summer Temperatures Despite Regional Heatwave

While much of the Kurdistan Region is currently experiencing sweltering heat, with temperatures reaching up to 48°C in central areas, some high-altitude locations remain remarkably cool—even during the height of summer.

Meteorologist and university professor Omar Rawandizi told Kurdistan24 on Monday that several mountainous areas in the region benefit from significantly lower temperatures due to their elevation.

“There are several areas in the Kurdistan Region that remain cool in the summer due to the elevation of the mountain peaks,” Rawandizi explained. “When the peaks reach an altitude of 150 meters or more, the temperature drops considerably.”

According to Rawandizi, nighttime temperatures in places like Penjwen, Haji Omaran, and villages in the Balakayati area fall sharply compared to the regional average. He highlighted that in some areas, particularly in the village of Weze, summer daytime temperatures rarely exceed 20°C, with nighttime lows around 15°C. Snow doesn’t melt in Weze even during the summer months.

While heatwaves do affect the region, Rawandizi clarified that they are intermittent and vary in intensity and duration.

With temperatures in many populated areas currently hovering between 30°C and 35°C, the cooler mountain regions offer a natural summer escape for residents and tourists alike, showcasing the Kurdistan Region’s diverse climate and topography.
