The railway line reached Sungai Siput and was opened on 5 July, 1897. An interesting aside is that the line reached Enggor on 1 July 1898.

From Glenn Willet, Asian Train Guide group on facebook: The Victoria Bridge in Enggor is the oldest railway bridge in Malaysia having been built between Dec 1897 and March 1900 as a crossing over the Perak River to serve the local tin mining industry. It cost $300,000 and was considered the largest railway project carried out in Malaya at the time. It is 353m long and the British Resident General at the time, Sir Frank Swettenham, in his speech, said that this was the largest bridge in Asia, outside of India.

During the Japanese occupation of Malaya in 1941, the British army attempted to impede the Japanese invasion southward by partly destroying the bridge. It was repaired after the end of the war. Barracks and additional security features were added during the period of Malayan Emergency. It remained in use until 2002, when a new concrete bridge wide enough to handle double-tracking was opened beside the old bridge.
