Israel has struck Doha, the Qatari capital, in an attempt to assassinate Hamas’s leadership there.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced Israeli jets had targeted the terror group’s leaders in the Gulf country, but did not explicitly mention Qatar.

Several explosions were heard in the city by witnesses. It is not yet clear the extent of the damage or casualties.

“The members of the leadership who were struck led the terror organisation’s activities for years, and are directly responsible for carrying out the October 7 massacre and waging the war against the State of Israel,” an IDF statement said.

It added that Israel took steps to mitigate civilian harm, including precision munitions.

In an immediate statement, Qatar condemned the “cowardly Israeli attack” on Hamas headquarters, calling it a violation of international law.

Israel’s Channel 12, citing sources, reported that the attack killed Khalil al-Hayya, a senior figure in Hamas’s Politburo.

“We attacked the Hamas leadership in Qatar, including Khalil al-Hayya and Jabareen. We are awaiting the results of the attack. There was a consensus in the political and security leadership,” a senior Israeli official told local media.

Zaher Jabarin, is a prominent member of the group’s armed wing, and in 2024 became Hamas’s leader of the West Bank. It is not yet clear if he was killed.
