President Nechirvan Barzani holds a meeting with a delegation from the US Senate

This evening, President Nechirvan Barzani welcomed Mr. Angus King, an Independent Senator from Maine, along with Mr. James Lankford, a Republican Senator from Oklahoma, and their accompanying delegation.

The meeting focused on strengthening relations between Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and the United States, with particular attention to ongoing cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Discussions also addressed Erbil-Baghdad relations and the broader situation in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The two sides exchanged views on developments in Syria and the wider region.

President Nechirvan Barzani conveyed his appreciation for the ongoing support from the United States towards Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, particularly highlighting the backing from Congress for the reform initiatives of the Peshmerga Ministry. He emphasized the significance of enhancing collaboration between the two sides across multiple sectors. Additionally, he addressed the potential for US job creation and investment opportunities in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

The guest delegation expressed their appreciation for the advancements made in the Kurdistan Region and highlighted the importance of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region as allies of the United States. They also reaffirmed the United States’ ongoing dedication to supporting both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

During the meeting, which was attended by the US Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, both parties acknowledged the significance of addressing the matters between Erbil and Baghdad through dialogue and mutual understanding, while also endorsing peace and stability in the region.
