From Kuala Lumpur to Gyeongju: Anwar to drive Malaysia’s Asean momentum at Apec
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to bring Malaysia’s momentum from the recently concluded 47th Asean Summit into the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Economic Leaders’ Meeting this week.
Senior Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said Anwar will continue representing Malaysia at the Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju, South Korea, starting tomorrow.
He added that the prime minister’s participation in the Apec forum reflects a continuation of Malaysia’s regional leadership, just days after he successfully chaired the Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur, which concluded yesterday.
“At the Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting, the prime minister will emphasise the importance of inclusiveness in strengthening supply chains, digital economy development, and sustainable development, as well as highlighting the country’s policy framework in digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI).
“The visit provides the prime minister with an opportunity to meet key industry players and discuss business and investment opportunities, in addition to further enhancing the strategic partnership between Malaysia and the Republic of Korea,” he said during a Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) briefing today.
Tunku Nashrul noted that before embarking on the working visit, Anwar is scheduled to attend the Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQT) session in Parliament tomorrow morning.
He added that the prime minister will then head to Gyeongju to attend the Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which will be held from October 31 to November 1.
“May the continued efforts, whether at the Asean or Apec stage, continue to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a country that is principled, progressive, and always committed to fighting for justice, prosperity, as well as regional peace for the country’s future,” he said.
Anwar, who recently hosted leaders from Asean member states and dialogue partners, including US President Donald Trump, is expected to meet them again in Gyeongju as Apec members.
Apec serves as a key platform for Malaysia to advance open markets and regional supply chain resilience. Last year, Apec economies accounted for 78 per cent of Malaysia’s total trade, valued at RM2.06 trillion.
Themed ‘Building a Sustainable Tomorrow,’ Apec 2025 Korea will focus on advancing regional trade, AI, and sustainability, with ministerial sessions on health, the digital economy, and small and medium-sized enterprises.
Malaysia last hosted Apec in 2020 in the first-ever virtual format due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
