Superdrug is planning a £250,000 takeover of Inverurie’s Poundland shop – with locals worried about what this means for the future of the cut-price chain in the town.

Superdrug, the health and beauty retailer which specialises in affordable items, is currently based a short distance away at 2a Station Square.

It has been on a major expansion drive in recent months, with plans to open 30 new stores in 2026.

The chain says there remains “strong customer demand” for “experience-led physical retail”.

And now new plans submitted to Aberdeenshire Council indicate that Superdrug has its eye on the Inverurie town centre unit currently occupied by Poundland.

What are Superdrug’s plans for the Inverurie Poundland?

A building warrant sent to the local authority spells out changes at the building.

It reveals how more than £250,000 would be spent on new fixtures and fittings in the sales area.

Meanwhile, planning permission is being sought for new signage at the shop.

The units at Station Square are separated only by an Edinburgh Woollen Mill shop.

Superdrug has declined to comment on the plans. Poundland was also approached but did not reply.

It is not known whether Poundland intends to relocate to another spot in the town.

Inveruruie Bid chairman Derek Ritchie is hopeful that Poundland will still remain a part of the town’s retail offering.

He told us: “This is obviously a very positive move for Superdrug moving in to much bigger premises and I wish them well.

“But it is a bit worrying that it seems that Poundland will be moving out, I do hope for the sake of the staff and the town centre that they may have plans to open up in new premises elsewhere in Inverurie in the future.”

Plans come amid mixed fortunes for affordable high street names

While Superdrug boasts of going from strength to strength, Poundland has reported problems in the recent past.

To avoid going bust, the bargain chain announced the closure of more than 100 stores towards the end of 2025.
