KRI President Barzani’s UAE visit underscores expanding regional dialogue and strategic cooperation
The President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani, arrived in the United Arab Emirates for an official visit focused on strengthening regional dialogue, enhancing political coordination, and advancing shared economic interests amid a shifting Middle Eastern landscape.
President Barzani is accompanied by his son, Idris Nechirvan Barzani, whose participation reflects a broader delegation that includes both official and non-governmental engagement. The visit comes at a time of heightened regional challenges, with leaders across the Middle East seeking to reinforce channels of communication and stability.
During a series of high-level meetings, President Barzani emphasised the importance of sustained dialogue and cooperation. In relation to a meeting held with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in Abu Dhabi, he said, “We discussed the state of relations between Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and the UAE, and exchanged views on the impact of regional developments. We emphasised the importance of reinforcing cooperation to promote stability and security across the region.”
Officials in the UAE highlighted the importance of continued engagement with both Erbil and Iraq. A senior Emirati representative stated, “Our partnership with the Kurdistan Region is an important component of our broader relationship with Iraq. We value the role Erbil plays in promoting dialogue and facilitating cooperation across different stakeholders.”
Discussions during the visit have focused on political and security developments, as well as opportunities for trilateral coordination between the UAE, Baghdad, and the Kurdistan Region. Both sides reiterated the need for alignment on key regional issues, particularly at a time when cohesive approaches are increasingly critical.
Under President Barzani’s leadership, economic ties between the UAE and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq have strengthened, with expanding collaboration in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and investment. Emirati companies have maintained strong interest in the Kurdistan Region, which is widely regarded as a key gateway for international investment within Iraq.
The inclusion of Idris Nechirvan Barzani, the President’s son has drawn attention as he continues to engage in regional forums, including the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, where he recently participated alongside his father. His work through the Rwanga Foundation, which focuses on education, environmental sustainability, and community development, reflects an expanding intersection between development initiatives and regional dialogue.
The visit underscores the Kurdistan Region of Iraq’s ongoing efforts to maintain constructive relations with international partners while reinforcing its role as a bridge for dialogue within a complex regional environment. Further meetings are expected to continue in the coming days.
