Barzani’s Baghdad visit strengthens political consensus
Kurdish President pushes unity, reform, and stability during critical government formation period
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani concluded a two day visit to Baghdad, reinforcing political cooperation during Iraq’s government formation process. During the visit, Barzani engaged Iraqi leaders in intensive discussions aimed at accelerating consensus and addressing pressing national political challenges. Moreover, the meetings came at a critical time as Iraq continues efforts to form a new federal government amid regional tensions.
Barzani met Prime Minister designate Ali al Zaidi and expressed full Kurdish support for his efforts to form a cabinet. He emphasized that the next government must respond effectively to economic pressures and security concerns facing Iraq at this stage. Meanwhile, al Zaidi seeks broader political backing as he works within a constitutional deadline to finalize his cabinet lineup.
Barzani’s visit therefore signaled that Erbil intends to play a constructive role in ensuring political stability and continuity. In addition, leaders discussed the importance of limiting weapons control strictly under state authority to strengthen law enforcement and national sovereignty. They also agreed that urgent economic reforms remain necessary to protect Iraq from market instability and fluctuating global energy prices.
Furthermore, Barzani reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to neutrality, stressing the importance of avoiding involvement in escalating regional conflicts nearby. At the same time, his meetings included leaders from Shiite, Sunni, and minority groups, reflecting an effort to build broader consensus. Notably, discussions included Sunni figures Mohammed al Halbousi and Khamis al Khanjar, who appeared together during a key political meeting.
This gathering highlighted Barzani’s ability to bridge political divides and encourage dialogue among rival factions within Iraq’s fragmented landscape. However, underlying issues such as oil exports, public sector salaries, and federal budget disputes remained central during discussions between leaders. Barzani pushed for long term solutions instead of temporary arrangements, emphasizing constitutional guarantees for Kurdistan Region rights within Iraq.
Consequently, his visit focused on strengthening partnerships while ensuring Kurdish interests remain protected within a unified federal framework moving forward. As Barzani returned to Erbil, attention shifted toward Baghdad, where political leaders must translate dialogue into concrete agreements soon. Ultimately, the success of this diplomatic effort will depend on whether Iraq’s factions maintain cooperation and finalize a stable government.
