Former Aberdeen record transfer scoops league and cup double ahead of World Cup
Former Aberdeen youth academy graduate Scott McKenna, who has been linked with a summer transfer window move to Celtic, has won a league and cup double.
Former Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna has completed a league and cup double with Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.
Dinamo Zagreb won the league title last month with former Pittodrie youth academy graduate McKenna a key component in the triumph.
The Scotland international started 30 league games as Dinamo Zagreb finished 18 points ahead of second placed Hajduk Split.
McKenna added the Croatian Cup to the league title, playing the entirety of a 2-0 win against Rijeka in the final on Wednesday evening.
The 29-year-old is reportedly a summer transfer window signing target for Celtic.
Reports in Croatia state Celtic have sent scouts to watch McKenna star for Dinamo on four separate occasions this season.
McKenna is set to be named in Scotland boss Steve Clarke’s squad for this summer’s World Cup.
The defender, capped 49 times, played a key role in the Scots qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
He played the entire game of the 4-2 qualifying win over Denmark at Hampden in November which secured qualification.
Aberdeen landed £4.75m for McKenna
McKenna was transferred from Aberdeen to Nottingham Forest for a then-club record fee of £3million in September 2020.
However, Aberdeen received an additional £1.75m in add-ons to bump the fee up to £4.75m due to McKenna being so successful at Forest.
The Dons pocketed an additional £1m in 2022 when the centre-back earned promotion to the Premier League after Forest beat Huddersfield Town in the play-off final.
Aberdeen then landed a further £750,000 boost when Forest secured their survival in the top-flight at the end of the 2022-23 season.
McKenna signed for Dinamo Zagreb last summer after leaving Spanish club Las Palmas.
The centre-back triggered a release clause with Las Palmas after their relegation from the Spanish top-flight.
