ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Monday received Jordan’s new consul general to Erbil, discussing bilateral relations.

“During the meeting, they discussed the longstanding relations between the Kurdistan Region and the Kingdom of Jordan, with both sides emphasizing their willingness and commitment to enhance and expand cooperation across sectors,” read a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

Barzani and Ziad Batarseh also touched on the November 11 parliamentary elections in Iraq and the current situation in the country, added the statement.

The new Jordanian consul general also visited Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani earlier this month.

“They discussed ways of enhancing relations in trade, environment, healthcare, and agriculture. Jordan remains a steadfast partner,” said Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, a senior advisor to Prime Minister Barzani who attended the meeting, on X on November 14.

Jordanian Agriculture Minister Khaled al-Henefat told Rudaw in 2024 that his country aims to increase the “modest” volume of imports from the Kurdistan Region and advance bilateral trade ties. He signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the development of cooperation and coordination in agriculture and food industry sectors during his visit to Erbil.

“We signed a memorandum of understanding that would increase the volume of trade between Jordan and the Kurdistan Region, which is currently modest unfortunately, but this agreement works to increase the facilitations [between the two sides],” Henefat said at the time.
