You’ve heard of the hospital pass, now meet the dressing room pass.

There can be no other description for the tame crossfield sclaff Dimitar Mitov sent in the vague direction of Dylan Lobban, leaving the young full-back to do an instant reckoning of the actuarial values of conceding a second goal or spending the remainder of the afternoon indoors.

Unluckily for the defender Daizen Maeda was crunching the same numbers, and was primed to take the fall when given the chance; any contact was minimal, but its outcome inevitable.

Lobban perhaps called the situation differently than most would – certainly his colleague Jack Milne, who with far higher stakes in play elected to let fate, and notorious unreliability in one-on-ones, take its course when last Maeda bore down unopposed on an Aberdeen goalkeeper in Glasgow – but for a spell it looked as if it was a stroke of incalculable genius.

The Dons’ ten men, though occasionally relegated to the role of spectators in Celtic’s woodwork shooting gallery, scrapped hard enough to keep their opponents within recoverable grasp, and briefly had a shout of an inexplicable point thanks to the aggressive intervention of some forgotten signings.Kenan Bilalovic and Kjartan Kjartansson had been so far out of the picture that, while the Conference League party to which they weren’t named was heading to Prague, they were in Banff campaigning for the Aberdeenshire Shield.

But from Macduff to Macduff, they found themselves running an icy sword through the heart of the champions’ defence, and threatening to decapitate Wilfried Nancy’s tactically-hallucinating Macbeth.

When, in Aberdeen’s bloated squad, they shall meet again remains to be seen, but they pressed a good case for more involvement. With many others flattering to deceive, there is an argument that it would be well if it were done quickly.
