June 15

With the current Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet approaching its end, political attention in the Kurdistan Region is now turning toward the formal formation of the next government.

The previous cabinet the ninth since the KRG’s establishment was initiated on June 12, 2019, when President Nechirvan Barzani officially tasked Masrour Barzani with forming a new government. That process was conducted under Executive Decree No. 1 (2019), pursuant to the amended Law of the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region No. 1 (2005), which allows a 30-day window for cabinet formation following the presidential directive. By July 12, 2019, the ninth cabinet had taken shape establishing a timeline many now expect to be mirrored in the current transition.

As June 15, 2025 nears, public speculation is mounting that the formation of the tenth cabinet is imminent. While no official decree has been issued yet, political observers suggest that internal discussions are steadily progressing behind closed doors.

President Nechirvan Barzani is expected to play a pivotal role in the transition process. Known for his calm diplomacy and focus on stability, President Barzani has consistently emphasized unity, economic development, and the protection of constitutional rights. In this critical moment, he is likely to use his influence and experience to help steer the political process forward, ensuring that the next cabinet is formed efficiently and reflects the needs of the people. His leadership remains a source of confidence as the region navigates complex challenges.

If the same legal framework is applied, the President of the Kurdistan Region will issue a decree authorizing the Prime Minister-designate to form the new cabinet. The candidate would then have 30 days to present a proposed ministerial lineup for parliamentary approval.

Despite the absence of an official announcement, parties across the political spectrum appear focused on ensuring a smooth and timely transition. The goal: maintain governmental continuity amid ongoing economic pressures, regional dynamics, and evolving security concerns.

With mid-June fast approaching, expectations are high. Many believe an announcement from the Presidency could arrive any day marking the beginning of a new chapter in the Kurdistan Region’s governance and signaling the political direction for the years ahead.
