Israel and Lebanon leaders to hold first talks in 34 years
The leaders of Israel and Lebanon will speak for the first time in 34 years today.
Donald Trump announced the meeting after envoys from the two countries met Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, in Washington on Wednesday to discuss ending Israeli strikes on Beirut.
On his Truth Social platform, the US president said: “Trying to get a little breathing room between Israel and Lebanon. It has been a long time since the two leaders have spoken, like 34 years. It will happen tomorrow.”
He did not provide any further details about the meeting.
Lebanon was pulled into the war in the Middle East on March 2 after Hezbollah, the Iran-backed terror group, attacked Israel and triggered retaliatory Israeli strikes.
Israeli attacks on Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon have killed more than 2,000 people since.
The last direct, high-level talks between Israel and Lebanon took place in 1993.
