A Voice of Reason in Times of Crisis: The Stance of the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq
The 12-day War

As tensions escalated dangerously in the region, particularly in terms of the recent flare-up between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Israel, the Iraqi Kurdistan Region found itself at a critical juncture. Amidst this volatile environment, President Nechirvan Barzani acted wisely, with prudence and resolve, taking a reasoned approach prioritizing peace, protection of the interests of Iraqi and regional interests, while reaffirming the Kurdistan Region’srole as a stabilizing influence in the Middle East.

This position is proven to be something consistent and ongoing. Actions speak louder than words, and in recent times, President Nechirvan Barzani has done so time and again. Recent events are only one example of such occasion. Heemphasized that the territory of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region must not be used as a base for hostile operations against neighboring countries. He clearly rejected any attempt to drag Iraq into any regional confrontation, especially whileKurdistan faces severe internal economic and political challenges as a result of ongoing disputes between Baghdad and Erbil. Amid difficulties in salary disbursement, struggles in government formation, and oil revenue sharing issues, he chose the path of diplomacy and strategic restraint over recklessness or provocation.

Rather than adding fuel to the fire, President Nechirvan Barzani took steps to de-escalate the situation: reaffirming the Region’s commitment to existing security agreements with the federal government and with neighboring Iran. These efforts reflect a deep awareness of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s fragile situation and a commitment to preserving peace as a shared value across borders.

Significantly, this stance did not go unnoticed. It was internationally acknowledged and positively highlighted by the Tasnim News Agency, an Iranian outlet closely aligned with the government there. In its report dated 30 June 2025, Tasnim noted that the Iraqi Kurdistan Region was steadfast in its refusal to allow its territory to be used for acts of aggression. The article referenced President Nechirvan Barzani's declaration that “A military solution would only intensify instability in the region.Tasnim further affirmed that this responsible behavior was a welcome step toward preserving stability and avoiding escalation in an already tense environment.

President Nechirvan Barzani’s actions reflect a broader vision of the Region’s role: neither as a passive observer nor a participant in proxy conflicts, but as a force for good both in diplomacy and regional de-escalation. This approach fosters a general atmosphere of mutual respect and aligns with the interests of Iraq as a whole, whose stability depends on calm borders and non-alignment in external rivalries.

In conclusion, leadership in times of danger is measured not by slogans, but by strategic restraint, clear-headed decision-making, and the courage to protect one’s people from unnecessary harm. President Nechirvan Barzani is the absolute embodiment of these qualities, emerging more and more as a voice of reason amid crisis, a guardian of regional balance, and a reliable partner to all in the pursuit of peace.
