The MRI Scanner

45 years ago, Professor John Mallard and his team at the University of Aberdeen made history with their pioneering full-body MRI scanner. That breakthrough transformed medicine worldwide.

Now, history is repeating itself.

Recently, Dr. Lionel Broche scanned Norma, the very first patient to use our new FCI scanner, also designed and built here in Aberdeen.

The FCI scanner is safer than current MRI technology and can identify stroke, heart disease, cancer and other diseases at much lower magnetic fields than were previously thought possible opening new doors for diagnosis and treatment.

Norma is taking part in a stroke study led by Professor Mary Joan MacLeod, helping researchers explore how this technology could help diagnose and treat stroke.
