Erbil’s Water Transformation: Inside the Largest Water Infrastructure Project in Iraq and the Region

The Kurdistan Region took a historic step forward in infrastructure development with the inauguration of the Erbil Rapid Water Project — a technologically advanced system designed to end the city’s chronic water shortage. The ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, marked the official opening of what has been described as the largest project of its kind in Iraq and neighboring countries.
Implemented by the Hemn Group under the direct instruction of the Prime Minister, the initiative reflects the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) commitment to addressing the essential needs of its people.
Khalid Khoshnaw, the owner of Hemn Group, credited the project’s inception to Prime Minister Barzani’s strategic decision to resolve Erbil’s water challenges permanently. “To fundamentally solve Erbil’s years-long water scarcity problem, by the decision of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Hemn Group was tasked with implementing the project,” he stated.
The project faced numerous technical and logistical challenges, but the company pushed forward with determination, executing the plan in record time through a continuous 24-hour, three-shift operation. "Our focus was always on reducing the project's completion time and fulfilling our promises to the Prime Minister and the people of Erbil in the best way possible," Khoshnaw affirmed.
Built to international standards, the system incorporates components from Germany, Denmark, Austria, and France, as well as pipes from one of the world's largest manufacturers in Turkey. “This is the most advanced system of its kind, never used before in any project in Iraq or the region,” said Khoshnaw.
Throughout the project’s execution, Prime Minister Barzani’s direct support and oversight proved critical. "Without the support of the Prime Minister and the continuous follow-up from his office, the project could not have been implemented in such a short time," Khoshnaw said.
The Erbil Emergency Rapid Water Project stands not only as an engineering feat but as a testament to effective governance, public-private partnership, and a leadership determined to deliver essential services to its citizens with urgency, precision, and care.
