President Nechirvan Barzani and President of European Commission discuss bilateral relations
Munich, 14 February 2026.
On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, President Nechirvan Barzani met with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
Their discussions focused on the European Union’s relations with both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as the latest developments in the region. Both sides emphasized the significance of enhancing mutual cooperation, particularly in sectors that contribute to stability and economic growth.
The meeting also covered the situation in Syria, the Kurdish population and other communities in the country, the threat posed by terrorism, recent developments in the region, and the challenges to achieving peace in the Middle East.
Ms. von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in the Kurdistan Region, commended President Nechirvan Barzani’s efforts, and recognized the Kurdistan Region’s vital role in maintaining stability in the region.
